Illiterate

Persons who declared not to be able to read and/or write. This definition does not correspond to the one adopted by UNESCO.

Imports

Imports comprise all goods (new or second hand) that enter the country (through payment or free of charge) as well as all services that non-resident units supply to resident ones.

Imports

Imports into a given Member State are:a) goods which enter the statistical territory of the Member State from a non-member country and are:- placed under the customs procedure for release into free circulation (goods intended to be consumed in the importing Member State or dispatched to another Member State), either immediately or after a period in a customs warehouse; or - placed under the customs procedure for inward processing (including inward processing in a customs warehouse) or processing under customs control (usually goods destined to be processed, transformed or repaired for subsequent re-export) either immediately or after a period in a customs warehouse.

Inactive population

All persons who are not classified as employed or unemployed are defined as inactive. Comprise persons in a non-professional condition: aged under 15 years, housewives, students, persons retired from work. under military service, unable to work.

Inbound tourism

Inbound tourism comprises the activities of non-residents of a given country travelling to and staying in places in that country and outside their usual environment.

Incineration

The process of burning solid waste under controlled conditions to reduce its weight and volume, often to produce energy

Incineration plant

any stationary or mobile technical unit and equipment dedicated to the thermal treatment of wastes with or without recovery of the combustion heat generated. This includes the incineration by oxidation of waste as well as other thermal treatment processes such as pyrolysis, gasification or plasma processes in so far as the substances resulting from the treatment are subsequently incinerated

Income account

In the income account are recorded all operations concerning the allocation (and re-allocation) of resources (interest, dividends, current transfers, etc.).As concerns the national economy, the most important flows recorded in the income account are:- revenues: compensation of employees, income from capital ? enterprises of resident factors, indirect taxes, current transfers from the rest of the world;- outlays: contributions to production.

Index number

Index numbers measure the changes over time of figures that cannot be measured directly. Examples of index numbers are price indices, industrial production indices, etc.

Indirect taxes on production and imports

Are compulsory payments made by the production units the Public Administration or to EU Institutions. They are calculated on the production or imports of goods and services, on the use of labour, on the property or use of land, buildings or other goods employed in the production activity. They do not depend on the profit made by the production unit.

Induced abortion (voluntary abortion):

Interruption of pregnancy performed by a specialist, with the intention to remove the products of conception. First-trimester abortions are to be performed at the woman?s request, in case pregnancy, birth and motherhood may affect the physical and mental health of the woman. Induced abortion can be performed after the first trimester if gestation and birth may jeopardise the woman?s life or if fetus has serious malformations or defects, or if the physical and mental health of the woman could be seriously affected.

Industrial crops

Crops that are normally not sold directly for consumption because they need to be industrially processed prior to final use.Examples: Tobacco, hops, cotton, rape, turning rape, soya, linseed, flax, hemps, etc.

Industrial production index

Measures the changes over time of the volume of the industrial production. Only industry in the strict sense is considered (construction is therefore excluded).

Industrial wastewater

Industrial Wastewater is process and non-process wastewater generating from manufacturing, commercial, mining, and silvicultural facilities or activities. This includes the runoff and leachate from areas that receive pollutants associated with industrial or commercial storage, handling or processing, and all other wastewater not otherwise defined as domestic wastewater.

Infant mortality rate

Ratio of the number of deaths during the first year of life to the total number of live births, multiplied by 1 000.

In-patient

A patient who is admitted to a hospital or clinic for treatment that requires at least one overnight stay.

Insecticides

Insecticides, the classical "pesticides", are applied only when the pest incidence is manifest. They are only applied as protective measure against attack from soil insects when incorporated into a seed dressing. Insecticides can act via contact, inhalation or ingestion by the target pest. Monitoring environmental conditions for pest incidence is indispensable in integrated cropping systems.

Institutional sectors

Groups of institutional units having similar economic behaviour (financial and non-financial companies, households, public administrations, rest of the world).

Institutional sectors (1995 ESA)

Sectors are obtained by disaggregating the total economy to obtain more homogeneous groups of resident institutional units, which are similar in respect to their economic behaviour, their objectives and functions.The ESA distinguishes between the following institutional sectors:- Non-financial corporations;- Financial corporations;- General government;- Households (as consumers or entrepreneurs);- Non-profit institutions serving households;- Rest of the world.

Institutional unit

A resident production units that has a complete accounting system and decides autonomously on the various aspects of its activity.

Insurance with INAIL (National Institute for Insurance against Occupational Accidents)

INAIL protects workers against physical and economic damages deriving from accidents or diseases caused by the work activity. Employers insured with INAIL are not liable for occupational accidents or diseases involving their employees.

Insurance with INPS (National Institute for Social Security)

Insurance against disability, old age and widowship. Is compulsory for all employees of the private sector, all autonomous workers (craftsmen, traders and sharecroppers), and all parasubordinate workers.

Interim worker

Person recruited by a temporary work agency, which supplies temporary labour force to other enterprises.

Intermediate consumption (Agriculture, economic accounts)

Intermediate consumption represents the value of all goods and services used as inputs in the production process, excluding fixed assets whose consumption is recorded as fixed capital consumption. The goods and services concerned are either transformed or used up in the production process (cf. ESA 95, 3.69.). In a detailed classification by different categories of items, intermediate consumption shows the interlocking of agriculture with other branches of the economy brought about by inputs.

Intermediate goods

Intermediate goods are goods included in other goods produced.

Intermediate worker

Worker performing activities in-between those of clerical workers and skilled manual workers, that is, a person who has competence to control groups of manual workers.

Intermodal centre

Is part of an interport, but may also exist oustside an interport, as road-raiways exchange centre.

Intermodal transport

Movement of goods (in one and the same loading unit or a vehicle) by successive modes of transport without handling of the goods themselves when changing modes. Vehicle can be a road or rail vehicle or a vessel.

Comprises domestic tourism and inbound tourism

International air transport

Air transport to or from airports located outside the Italian territory.

International visitor

Is a person who goes to a different country from the one where he/she normally resides for a period of time of less than one year, and for a reason other than a temporary or permanent movement from the country of residence or the performance of a paid activity in the visited country.

Intramural research expenditure

Intramural expenditures are all expenditures for R&D performed within a statistical unit or sector of the economy during a specific period, whatever the source of funds.

Intrastat

With the removal of frontier controls between Member States under the Single Market programme, a new system, known as Intrastat was devised to collect statistics on intra-Community trade. Developed by Eurostat and operational since 1 January 1993, Intrastat involves collecting information directly from businesses and makes use of Value Added Tax (VAT) data and the VAT reporting system.Intra-EU trade statistics record the arrival and dispatch of movable property recorded by each Member State.Intra-EU trade statistics do not record goods in transit. Intra-EU trade statistics are not based on either the general or the special trade system; these concern customs procedures. Given its coverage of transactions, however, Intrastat closely matches the general trade system.Intra-EU trade statistics do not cover the following arrivals and dispatches:- those effected by private individuals or small enterprises which are exempt from periodic tax declarations;- those which are excluded pursuant to special provisions of Community legislation.

Invalidity allowance

Allowance paid to persons with a reduced working capability and whose income does not exceed a given threshold.

Inventories

Produced assets that consist of goods and services that came into existence in the current period or in an earlier period held for sale, use in production or other use at a later date. They consist of materials and supplies, work in progress, finished goods and goods for resale.Included are all inventories held by government, including, but not limited to, inventories of strategic materials, grains and other commodities of special importance to the nation.

Investimento diretto

Direct investment is a category of international investment that reflects the objective of an entity resident in one economy to obtain a lasting interest in an enterprise resident in another economy. In line with international standards (IMF), the "10 % ownership criterion" is applied in order to infer the existence of a direct investment relationship, i.e. a lasting interest in the case of the euro-area balance of payments/international investment position. Based on this criterion, a direct investment relationship can exist between a number of related enterprises, regardless of whether the linkage involves a single chain or a number of chains. It can extend to a direct investment enterprise's subsidiaries, sub-subsidiaries and associates. Once the direct investment is established, all subsequent financial flows/holdings between/vis-à-vis the related entities are recorded as direct investment transactions/positions.

Investment goods

Investment goods are goods used for the production of other goods (machinery, means of transport, etc.). They are used for a period longer than one year.

Investment rate of households

gross fixed investments as a proportion of gross disposableincome of households.

Investment rate of non-financial companies

Gross fixed investment of non-financial companies as a percentage of their gross value added.

ISBN

International Standard Book Number: international code that identifies a publication. It is assigned by the national centres, following authorisation by the ISBN international agency located in Berlin.
